Brief: Iceland distances from the EU
Iceland votes against
On the 26th of August 2026, 52.8% of Icelanders opposed the nation restarting accession negotiations with the EU. Main concerns centre on the independence of its maritime and farming industries, including fears of imposed fishing quotas, the loss of autonomy over its EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone), and disruption to the domestic market through CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) subsidies.
Reform of the EEAS?
A joint Franco-German plan would have Ursula von der Leyen expand her role in foreign policy by positioning the High Representative under the Commission President's authority.
Kaja Kallas, the current High Representative, would be integrated into the Commission with a wider scope of responsibilities and multisectoral authority. Under it, she would have a coordinating role across multiple Directorates-General, which include development aid, humanitarian relief, defence industry, and international relations. The final say on policy, however, would remain in the hands of the Commission President.
The proposal is planned for an informal EU foreign ministers' meeting in Ireland this Wednesday.
US-Canada trade war
Donald Trump has set new tariffs on key Canadian sectors, including lumber, steel, aluminium, and automotive. It is a significant escalation, considering last week's 50% tariffs on over €17.2bn of Canadian goods. Mark Carney has pledged to match the levy 'dollar for dollar', resuming the trade war, after negotiations to reach an agreement broke down on August 21.
As outlined by Ottawa, main conflict points include Washington's demand for input in future trade deals, most notably on its relations with China. Economic sovereignty is an important factor, especially in light of a significant decrease in trade across the US-Canada border due to increased costs, which caused exports to the EU and China to rise by over 20% each compared with 2024.
Missiles over the middle-east
US Central Command authorised the first strikes in the region since late July, striking two rocket launchers on Larak Island in a pre-emptive strike, fearing Iran would "launch rockets and deploy sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz". The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vowed retaliation, attacking US bases of King Hussein and al-Azraq with ballistic missiles, eight of which were shot down by Jordan's army.
During an interview with Fox, Donald Trump said, "We're going to hit them hard", adding that although sanctions have been "kicking in strongly", he has doubts about possible talks: "I just don't know if you can count on a deal with them".
Nepal flood censored
The flash flood that originated in Nepal and swept through Tibet has killed at least 750 people, with 3000 still missing. Extensive rescue efforts are ongoing; however, minimal footage and no eyewitness accounts are publicly available from the ongoing operation or the destruction. Any information not from official channels is being suppressed, with even private conversations on WeChat being censored, and state media displaying only 1 video of the disaster to date.
It is a prime example of state censorship, especially in the context of Tibet being a restricted region. Particularly in the news sector. Journalists are forbidden from entering, and any reports circulate for only a few hours before all unofficial information is removed and outlets are restricted.
